The Autobiography of Jacob Conzett,
Journal of The Presbyterian Historical Society, Vol. 25, No. 3 Pages 131-152
Sept., 1947 by H. Clifford Fox and Franz Cohrt
This article was provided by Dr. H. Clifford Fox, who wrote "German
Presbyterianism in the Upper Mississippi Valley" as his doctoral thesis
at the University of Iowa in 1941. He studied Rev. Jacob Conzett's role in
creating what was to become the University of Dubuque and, to do so, he
translated the hand written German scribed by Jacob before his death in
1915. The original document image scans are available, as well as the
article itself in text form.
- Recollections of People and Events
of Dubuque, Iowa 1846-1890 by Josiah Conzett 1909
A walking tour of Dubuque through the eyes of a first generation Swiss
immigrant (and brother to Rev. Jacob Conzett) some 50 years after the fact.
In it he speaks of many immigrant families, conditions of the time and
events which shaped early America. Translated from the original German
script by family members with the assistance of Dr. H. Clifford Fox, it is
was made available as a gift to close family in the 1970's. It is provided
here in original and corrected text files, as well as being indexed.
- My Civil War: Before, During and
After by Josiah Conzett 1911
Written by Josiah from notes written in his "mems" book kept in his breast
pocket during the war, his words bring to us glimpses of the horrors of war,
the trials of life and the reality of coping with a changing world through
the almost child-like eyes of an early settler. While some of the family
folklore of his Conzett roots may be off the mark, there is no doubt he saw
himself as a pioneer; as old-school Swiss in a newly formed America. It is
provided here in original and corrected text files, as well as being
indexed.
